Due to the increasing number of trucks and cars in 1990 management decided to invest in intermodal equipment. As soon as the Russian market opened in 1991 it was the carpet industry that pioneered in this new and huge market and did it successfully.

Due the great succes and environmentally friendly advances of using rail traffic Van Dieren Maritime decided to takeover the operation of a rail sercive from Herne to Älmhult and recently, in the beginning of 2006, a second rail service was started from Herne to Norrkoping.

Weekly service links the ports of Hull and Moerdijk to the ports of Ventspils and Klaipeda. Van Dieren offers railway connections from the port of Ventspils / Riga to Moscow.
